Torre de Belém (Belem Tower) is a fortified tower located in the Belém district of Lisbon, built in the 16th century in the Manueline (Portuguese Gothic style) to commemorate the expedition of Vasco de Gama. A memorial to the Portuguese power during the Age of the Great Discoveries, this elegant and defensive construction is one of the most popular symbols of the city.
Cabo da Roca is a cape that forms the most western point of mainland Portugal and of mainland Europe, located 40 km west of Lisbon. It has a monument with a stone plaque that has inscribed its coordinates. On top of the 140 meters above sea level cliffs, we can find the lighthouse and a tourist shop. This place was defined by poet Luís de Camões as : "where the land ends and the sea begins".
The city centre or The Baixa like they call it, is organised in a gryd sistem and a network composed by squares that where built after the Lisbon eartquake who took place in 1755.
One of the main atractions is The Castle of Sao Jorge (Saint George) and the Lisbon Cathedral, there are both located in one of the seven hills of the city to the east of the centre.
The oldest district of Lisbon is Alfama located close to the Tagus, which has made it relatively unscathed through the various earthquakes.
